Starter’s Guide for Homeschooling

Starter’s Guide for Homeschooling

Parents have been searching online to determine the best curriculum for their children for the upcoming new average school year. Yes, this year’s school year will not be easy. There will be plenty of adjustments, especially in your daily routine. Your child may not like it initially as he or she will surely miss the “normal” schooling experience with his classmates.

However, as a parent, you are always after your child’s health and safety. Despite the health protocols, you can never compromise your child’s physical health just because drastic changes in your schedule make you uncomfortable. It may be uncomfortable at first, but the long-term benefits will be more rewarding than you thought they could be.

To start this school year systematically, you need to consider what you need and want for this particular year only. I will be presenting you a complete guide below on what you have to do and what things you have to focus on while being a homeschooling parent.

How many hours a day do you homeschool?

  • High school: 4 to 6 hours
  • Grades seven and eight: 3 to 4 and a half hours
  • Grades five and six: 2 and a half hours to 3 and a half hours
  • Grades three to four: 1 and a half hours to 3 hours
  • Grades one and two: 4 to 5 minutes to 1 and a half hours
  • Kindergarten: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Pre-kindergarten: 15 to 30 minutes

Below are the suggested academic or book times based on age and grade.

Best Workbooks for Homeschooling K12

1. For grades K-6

I highly suggest that you purchase BrainQuest workbooks. These workbooks include reading instruction, arithmetic, and writing. These essential elements should be added to your homeschooling program to maintain your child’s progress and continuously exercise their intellectual functioning.

Help your kid complete at least one language page, one mathematics page, and a handwriting page per day.

You can actually take a short break when you feel like it’s getting stressful since there is ample time allocation for each set of pages. If your kid can already write and read, ask them about when they will start doing their pages. Do they want to do it independently? Or do they still want your supervision?

All-in-One Homeschool

I highly recommend you would use the All-in-One homeschool curriculum. This is actually an online curriculum you could use for free. These include different subjects you might need according to your country’s or state’s homeschool guidelines.

This free curriculum also provides daily assignments in multitudes of subjects. Choose what is essential to your child based on his or her age. Do not try to answer all of the assignments. Just focus on what your child can do this year.

Don’t underestimate your home’s power.

Having ample time to enjoy their lives at home with other family members is vital to your teen. This is indeed one of the most unique gifts you could ever hand them throughout your homeschooling journey.

As a friend, mentor, and parent, you must allow your child to also cherish his or her free time with a pet, his siblings, and with you. This is because these sources are where he gets his energy whenever drained.

Teach your child some real-life lessons too. Make the best out of the resources you have at home. Allow them to do some chores while memorizing some lines.

Through this, both of you can enjoy baking, cooking, and washing the dishes together while absorbing textbook knowledge. Therefore, do not forget to utilize your home’s building blocks to your child’s advantage.
